Links for the Voting Masses (and everyone else)

*Apex Raffle Time. Via the fine folks at Apex Digest: “We’ve pulled from our high-security cellar vaults some the most fiendishly delightful goodies you’ve ever seen, like free fiction critiques, ARCs of as-yet unavailable books signed by the authors, valuable rare books worth more than $50, a steampunk classic with zepplins–REAL ZEPPLINS!–doodled by the author himself, and the only Maurice Broaddus Quintuple Threat Pack in existence!” Bonus win: A portion of the proceeds will go to benefit Dolly’s Imagination Library.

*Maybe the Obamas will get one of THESE puppies. Click for a live feed of adorable puppies sleeping in a box. Or playing. Or nomming each other. Or … well, let’s be honest. Mostly sleeping. [Edited to add: If it’s dark, they’ve turned off the lights and let the pups have some nighttime snoozing.]

*Newsweek has the skinny. “The disclosures are among many revealed in ‘How He Did It, 2008,’ the latest installment in NEWSWEEK’s Special Election Project, which was first published in 1984. As in the previous editions, “How He Did It, 2008″ is an inside, behind-the-scenes account of the presidential election produced by a special team of reporters working for more than a year on an embargoed basis and detached from the weekly magazine and Newsweek.com. Everything the project team learns is kept confidential until the day after the polls close.” Fascinating, and funny, and sometimes sad.

*Here in my ‘hood. And I leave you with footage of the street party that broke out immediately following John McCain’s concession speech — right down the street from where we live. I understand it is a great pity that you cannot see the drag queen who is leading the crowd in song.

Thank you for providing me another exhibit for my evidence file of Reasons To Move To Seattle. After that, I know we WILL be visiting your fair city in '09.

You didn't say the raffle benefits Dolly's Imagination Library! That's so cool.

Journey--the voice of a new generation! :)

Sadly, yes. Or so it would seem :)

Hey--it's an awesome song--even if I need a warm coat of irony to really dig it.

Last night, it didn't matter.
cherie priest[info]cmpriest on November 6th, 2008 01:03 am (UTC)
Fair enough. There's definitely a time and a place for it.
FWIW, my husband would totally back you up. He has a wicked soft spot for Journey...

Well, if there's one thing I can say in favor of my music taste is its robust schizophrenia.

In heavy rotation here: the new Pink, a Scandavian doom metal band called Swallow the Sun, Brooklyn morbidity-chanteuse Marissa Nadler, Aussie twin uber-popsters The Veronicas and, um, Queen.

So Journey--no problem!

That video is awesome. Even in my slightly agoraphobic state, I'd have loved to have been there for that...

*Maybe the Obamas will get one of THESE puppies.

The link isn't working, but the Obama family has stated that they'll be adopting a rescue dog. :D

I think it's night, actually. They've turned out the lights :)

Our esteemed Spain the Cat was adopted from the Pet Placement Center in Red Bank, Tennessee about six years ago, herself. :)

Hehe... I <3 rescues. Though, 9 year old street rat that's currently at my feet knawing on a homemade pretzel that she stole off my plate an hour ago? She could learn some manners... punkass cat. Oy.
The Pied Piper[info]silverblaidd on November 6th, 2008 03:01 pm (UTC)
Thank you! There's a cat one as well - which I can't post as I'm using email currently. I've spent the better part of my life working in shelters, rescues and sanctuaries and it's a big passion of mine. We have two rescue cats, one foster cat and two rescue dogs living with us currently. I know [info]cmpriest's Spain the Cat was adopted as well, so yay all around!

Thank you for what you do!

I am so jealous of your hood's drag-led dance party. I was one of the 8% of white female Democrats in MS to vote for Obama. I drank loads, wept during the speech, and went to bed drunk and dreaming of a future where hotels in Mississippi don't think its ok to host white power conferences.

Wonderful video! I loved all the joyful, clumsy dancing. It was fantastic.

Could you tell where that video was shot? I'm thinking it might be close to my son's school.

:D
cherie priest[info]cmpriest on November 6th, 2008 05:26 am (UTC)
It's down near the Blockbuster on Broadway, corner of Pike, or thereabouts. :)

Ah, so not that close.

Thanks!

The street party video is awesome.

You know, I have always liked that Journey song, but I do wonder, why does Generation Millenial love it so much? My kids (young college age) all know it by heart. I find it sweetly amusing.

I think because it's an awesome song. :)
