the world's guiltiest conscience

in the year and a half i've worked for Mars, i've only called in sick once*--and on that particular occasion i had been exposed to strep throat and i had a fever. i was explicitly told upon being hired that anyone contagious must stay the hell home, for this is a fairly small operation and we all work in what is, for all practical points and purposes, one big room. a bad round of the flu can wipe out the whole office, thus this ironclad policy of "stay the hell home."

technically, i am not contagious today.

even so, i rolled out of bed at 8:30 (half an hour past my alarm's warning) and began making a round of calls. first, i tried the head boss--for he is usually present at that hour. no such luck. i left him a message and then called up my more immediate supervisor--a man who was more likely to tour with the Russian Ballet than be in the office before nine, but i figured i'd cover all my bases so i left him a message as well.

before i hung up, the operator told me she'd spotted the head boss's truck in the parking lot, so she reconnected me. i felt stupid speaking in person to the man who had just heard me blubbering in his voice mail, but at least my ass was now completely covered. the honchos at Mars rotate in an out of the office with great regularity, and i couldn't be sure exactly who--if anyone--would be present to take the information that i would be out today.

but i say all that to say this: regarding the Krystal on Cherokee Blvd., down the street from Ziggy's Liquors in Chattanooga, TN, USA--AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COST. you'd think it would be enough to scare away the public that it's been shut down in the past for spreading hepatitis, but oh no. sometimes it's midnight in this boring little city, and sometimes you're hungry for some sloppy little hot dogs. sometimes the masochism gets the better of you, and you take your chances.

i gambled and lost. i've got the worst case of food poisoning i've had since high school**, and i'm only just barely able (after two days) to keep down sodas and light foody fare. therefore, i beg your collective pardon but i'm going to finish this beverage and go lie down some more.

* okay--and i went home early once. but so far as i can recall, i've only actually failed to show ONCE.
** enchilada day at the school cafeteria, 1992--a day that will go down in infamy.

thank you for sparing us the technicolor details. hope you feel better soon!

further, i submit that you ARE in fact 'contagious', at least to those people with sensitive nerves whose own yakking reflexes might well be triggered by witnessing your own performance.

so, good choice in staying home. ya done good, kid, ya done good.

urgh... Food poisoning tends to be what hammers me most too. Good luck hon.

Could be worse... never... EVER... EVER eat a hotdog from a stand in London at 3am that is selling curried onions. EVER.

God I was ill then... though it sounds similar to what you've got. Don't worry.. should clear up in a day or two from now, or so my food hygine teacher told me ;)

If it lasts longer than 4 days see a doctor as it could be more serious than just a basic food poisoning bacteria.

I hear you... I rarely call in sick... hell I was in with laryingitus (sp) and Brochitus (i had it at the same time)... I should have stayed the hell home... but I didnt feel bad... I just couldn't utter a word above a whisper without sounding like my vocal cords were breaking.

it's sad when one has more sick time on the books than vacation time... I have over 150 hours of sick time accrued...

With as hard as you work, and the crap you put up with from those companies... rest with a clear conscience...

With your food poisioning... did you get really dizzy just before your stomach launched it's contents? Hot and cold sweats too?

Drink lots of water and eat bread...

OH Kee-rist, I have been to both Ziggy's Liquors and that Krystal down the street. NUTS! My son's mother is from Chattanooga, and I have spent some time around that town.

This is what happens when you drink at Ziggy's and eat at Krystal:

Awww Poor Baby.

Get well soon.

i bet you won't eat a krystals for a long time.

I've only had food poisoning once and I know I got it from some meat loaf. but before I ate the meatloaf I had a bagel. Now, I know the bagel had nothing to do with my food poisoning but I associate the bagel with the same day of being sick so it took me 6 months before I could even look at a bagel again.

Food Poisoning
I feel your pain. The Rally's up the road got me the other week. Feel better!

Ack, hope you're feeling better... I had a bad case of camplyobacter food poisoning earlier this year, and I've never felt so bad in my life. I was honestly thinking to myself 'You know... if breaking a limb took this away from me I'd do it in a heartbeat'.

Lesson to be learnt from this: never, ever, cut fresh bread rolls with a knife used to cut raw chicken without washing it throughly first.

Of course, that had to be the week that the arch-kitten Samael decided to explore the toilet seat, and slipped & fell into the bowl. Thankfully I'd cleaned it throughly, or it'd have been a really interesting life lesson for the little hyperactive ball of fluff.

oh my not that Krystals!
i used to do laundry in that little laundrymat next door. we would get stuff to eat at that Krystals, of course this was about seven or eight years ago, possibly when they have better management, but they were still kinda iffy even then.
sorry to hear your feelin funky.
hope you feel better soon hon.

We have a local curry house which has pretty much the same after effects. Oddly enough, there is also an unprecedented amount of missing canines in the area.
Hope you are feeling better soon Cherie.

was able to relate....
Hope you are feeling better -- I thought this might get you laughing a little bit. And if there is any in there you want to add to the pool of scaring a Johovah's Witness because I am sure you could come up with a few as well. I have been sick like that once, and that was on Christmas of 1995. I was sick an entire month of November with Bronchitis which really sucked ass, but damn, did you go to the doctor with that. I had kept a lot of fluids around when I was in the hotel when I did a self quarrentine (the photos from that time were to show some of the other members in the community that I was resting. Because ldybastet was tempted to sew me into bed so I stayed in bed long enough to rest.) In Iowa stay away from the community kitchen on some days because they would make something that would give a person stomach cramps -- I had some violent ones when I stayed at a homeless shelter in the south loop from the food there.
