Make Way for Ducklings, Dammit

I HUNGER, anemone frill, red is nature's warning color, Bullshit., super model 1979, zombie whisperer, Sweet, Tremble Cat, Woe., howard the fish, me in new glasses, starfish splat, KermitOMGYAY, starfish cuddle, we can see you, all the wimminfolk, zombie, zombie zombie zombie, jellyfish red, a barrel of laughs, incoming otter, summertime 2, ghost hunters, *PBBBBT*, ORLY?, Saucy, Braindead today., winter, Steampunkin, face of god with beard and squint, bridal birdie, starfish red, Tomfoolery, creamsicle fish, emo fish, fabulous cat, jellyfish blue zen, me and my hat, summertime

This is freakin’ adorable. An off-duty cop used his patrol car to stop 3 lanes of traffic … in order to help a mother duck and a row of ducklings cross the highway. He didn’t know he was being watched by a State Department of Transportation camera.

For the impatient: fast-forward it to about 55 seconds.

Warm the burly, cobwebbed cockles of your stone-cold heart with the full story, available here.

That is so cute....I kept reading to figure out what he'd be charged with.

Haha! I did the same thing, but no -- everyone seems pretty happy about it. I'm sure there are some duck-haters someplace who'll file a complaint, but overall, I think this guy's gained good karma for the next ten years :)

I also took it for granted he'd get in trouble over it. These are cynical times.

OH, SO CUTE! Thanks for sharing...this guy is local for me, on the roads my hubby drives to get to work! How cool! I loved it, i wanted to cheer as well.

Too bad that other car that stopped gets no kudos...it sat and blocked traffic too!

Agreed. I thought it was great that the car in the next lane over also halted -- even before the cop made him/her. :)

Saw that
on the TV at the DMV while I was (very briefly) waiting my turn to replace Dr. P's stolen license plates. It is very sweet. At first when I saw the police officer's car, I thought, "oh, shit, someone's being an impatient..." and then realized what he was doing.

Hooray for ducklings!

Someone on my f-list recently witnessed a non-cop person in a big SUV (or some such) escort ducklings out of a McDonald's parking lot and across a road in much the same way.

I love stories like this.

Me too :) Especially because I used to get dirty looks for stopping in the road to move turtles and the like when I lived in Tennessee; and occasionally I would wish I had a cop light -- just to make it easier to be the critter patrol :)

Awww... how could anyone get in trouble for that? He could always say they represented a hazard to traffic and he was just... expediting the avoidance of accidents.

Hurray for the cop and his duckling-mobile!

If I were on the road behind him an not knowing of the ducklings, I'da been pissed at the stoppage. Were I to know about the duckies, I'da been all kinds of "Awww..."

I was waiting, much like the comment above, to see whether or not the officer got in trouble for helping the ducks cross the highway. That there hasn't been any negative consequences is almost as happy an ending as the ducks got.

For some reason I saw the wrong video. On the regular "friends page" view it's a video of a blond woman. When I click "read comments" the right video comes up. o_O I wonder what that's about?

Growing up in Boston, Make Way for Ducklings, by Robert McCloskey is perhaps one of my favorite books ever. I can read it over and over again, by myself or to my children.

But this video is so heartwarming and SO reminiscent!

That is awesome. _Make Way for Ducklings_ was one of my favorite stories when I was little. I've just sent this off to my mom :)
